Republican county chairmen of the 45th Senate district and 89th Representative district met on December 1, 2018 to fill vacancies in those two positions for the remainder of the 100th General Assembly. Vacancies existed in both of those districts with the resignations of Sen. Tim Bivins and Rep. Brian Stewart; each submitted resignation paperwork effective December 4, 2018. “Pursuant to state statute, the chairmen of the two districts met in order to fill each vacancy” said Jim Thompson, Winnebago County Republican Chairman and Chairman of the 45th Legislative Committee. “The resignation of Sen. Bivins - who has provided decades of service to Lee County and the Northern Illinois area - set into motion the need to fill both seats”. Brian Stewart, current 89th district representative and senator-elect for the 45th legislative (senate) district, also submitted his resignation as 89th representative this November.
Stewart was unanimously selected to replace Sen. Bivins by the chairmen attending the meeting. Shortly after that meeting adjourned, the chairmen of the 89th district convened and selected Andrew Chesney to fill the vacancy in that district created by Stewart’s resignation. Chesney was a Freeport alderman and representative-elect for the 89th representative district.
