STERLING – Woodlawn Dance Academy’s 2016-2017 Competition Team came home as National Champions from the Rainbow National Dance Competition in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee! This year they participated in three regional competitions: Radix Dance Competition and Convention in Itasca, Cathy Roe’s Ultimate Dance Competition in Oswego and Rainbow National Dance Competition in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Awards included Ultimate Elite, Double Platinum, Overall High Scores, Best Costume, Most Entertaining, Top Production and numerous specialty awards. The Woodlawn Dance Competition teams are directed by Erika Matheney and Christy Zepezauer.
“All of us at Woodlawn are very proud of each of the dancers,” said Zepezauer, also Woodlawn Arts Academy’s Executive Director. “They worked so hard the entire competition season, and we are thrilled with the progress they’ve made as individuals and teams. It is important for us to expose our dancers to various opportunities so they will continue to strive to reach new levels of excellence.”
During the Rainbow National Dance Competition, 28 dancers from WDA competed against 21 different studios from across the United States. The Woodlawn dancers held their own against very talented studios from larger cities. The dancers competed in solos, duos, small group, large group and production in many different disciplines, such as jazz, tap, lyrical, musical theatre and hip hop.
“It was a very successful year full of learning and fun,” said Zepezauer. “We look forward to next season!”
