The community is invited to Celebrate International Women’s Day on March 10, from 12-2 at the YWCA of the Sauk Valley, 412 First Avenue, Sterling, IL. This free event is sponsored by the P.O.W.E.R Coalition and the YWCA of the Sauk Valley. The 2-hours will be filled with inspiration as we celebrate the accomplishments of women, while discussing the challenges that women still face in our modern times. “For centuries, women have been on the fore-front on every issue. Whether it was for an 8-hour work day, fighting racism, transphobia, or getting paid equally, if not more than their male counterpart to name a few. Which is why it is important to celebrate International Women's Day for all working women.” said AJ Reed, Lead Organizer of the P.O.W.E.R Coalition, and who will conduct a mini-workshop on how men can work in solidarity with women.
Farheen Hakeem will be the keynote speaker during the event. She will share her perspective as an activist, organizer, and educator on why intersectionality is important when fighting for women's rights. Hakeem’s experiences have led her to address issues such as women's rights, Islamophobia, and immigration on a national level. Hakeem also ran for office in Minnesota, where she came in second in a four-way open state senate race as a third-party candidate.
