Morrison Police Department Announces Helmut Incentive Program

Morrison Police Chief Brian Melton is proud to announce the Helmet Incentive Program again this year!  The program, which started in 2009, is to promote bicycle safety among our youth and is only possible through the continued partnership and support of the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill, owners Ellen and Bart Smith.

The Morrison Police Department’s Helmet Incentive Program offers an incentive to those children (ages 3-16) that wear their helmet when bicycling.  Chief Melton explains, “Starting today and through the summer months, anytime a Morrison Police Officer observes a child between the ages of 3 and 16 safely riding their bicycle with their helmet on, the Officer will reward that child with a coupon for free ice cream at the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill in Morrison.”  Melton continues, “We hope this program encourages our youth to wear their helmets and practice bicycle safety when riding.”

Melton closed with, “We are very grateful to the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill, Ellen and Bart Smith and their staff for their continued support.  Most importantly, we are excited about having the opportunity again this year for the program!  We hope to reward even more children this year … so wear your helmets and encourage others to do so as well!”

Whiteside County Health Department's Advice on Exposure to Bats

With the warm weather came an abundance of bat exposures in Whiteside County. Bats are a known source of rabies and should be taken seriously. Rabies is a viral disease causing encephalitis (brain inflammation) in humans and animals and typically, if untreated, ends in death. Approximately 6% of bats carry rabies.   If there is an exposure to a bat, the bat needs to be safely collected so it can be tested for rabies. Exposures include bites, scratches, and mucus membrane exposures. An exposure can also include a person awakening with a bat in the bedroom where direct contact could have taken place during sleep. In these cases, the bat needs to be caught and taken to the Whiteside County Health Department Animal Control, phone # 815-625-3507. Please carefully catch the bat so the brain is not damaged. If the bat is let go outside or beaten to the point of not being able to test the bat, rabies' vaccine may and probably will be recommended by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Be proactive and assure no bats can get into your house. Be sure you have secure screens on doors and windows, as well as no holes or access from the outside in your attic. If you find a bat in your house and there has been no exposure, use a net to free the bat. However, if there was any chance of an exposure, secure the bat and call the health department at 815-626-2230 ext. 1232.

More information about bat exposures can be found at: https://www,cdc.gov/rabies/exposure/animals/bats.html or
